Are you counting your cats calories?

Posted on Friday, October 9th, 2009

Here is a great article I found from Science Daily which all cat owners should read. I know a friend of mine that over feeds his cats (and himself).

“You might watch your daily calorie intake or glance over nutritional information on food packages, but do you do the same for your pet?

Dr. Susan Nelson, a veterinarian and assistant professor of clinical sciences at Kansas State University, said there are several guidelines to follow when feeding your pet to ensure that it maintains good health.

Cat v Dog

Posted on Saturday, July 11th, 2009

This old arguement again from the LA Times, the old Cat v Dog intellegence test. I have to say I have come across some really smart and not so bright dogs and cats so I’m sitting on the fence for this one. Anyway, its not a bad read so here is the article anyway.

“Sorry, cat people. Although your pets of choice are independent, clean and able to use a litter box, dogs have at least one leg-up on them: They’re more able to understand the concept of cause-and-effect. Or so says psychology lecturer Britta Osthaus, who recently conducted a study on cats’ thought processes using 15 feline subjects.

Cat-food irradiation banned as pet theory proved

Posted on Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

How sad that it has taken this long for the government to work out what was causing the deaths of many cats around Australia. For those that don’t have the history on this story a Canadian gourmet pet food called brand called Orijen was believed to be responsible for the deaths of many cats but it has now been proven that it was in fact the governments requirement of irradiating imported pet food which contaminated and poisoned the cats.

Here is the story by Kelly Burke from the Sydney Morning Herald website regarding the change in government legislation regarding imported cat food.

Pet Airways, Means Your Pet Travels In Style

Posted on Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

What a great idea, its a pitty the Australian market isn’t big enough for this to be a service in Australia.

“A US company has launched the world’s first pets-only airline dedicated to animal-friendly travel. Pet Airways will cater for people who loathe the idea of their pets being stored in the cargo hold area during a flight by offering their pet-only service.

From July the new airline will fly dogs and cats in the main cabin of a turbo-prop Beech 1900 passenger plane which has furnishings such as the seats and bins removed, with animals placed in their private pet carriers and locked into a restraint system.

The plane can hold up to 50 dogs or cats. A pet attendant checks on the animals and makes sure they have regular toilet breaks during the flight.

“Pet Airways is the world’s first airline exclusively dedicated to the safe and comfortable transportation of pets,” the company’s website says.

“With Pet Airways, your pet will be safe and comfortable flying in the main cabin – not in cargo.”

Pet Airways will fly to 42 US cities including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington. ”
